This Labor Day, We Honor These 6 Working Cats
On Labor Day, we celebrate people who work hard day in and day out to put food on their table and contribute to their country’s economy. In the U.S. and Canada, the first Monday of September marks this holiday, and many workers get to enjoy a day away from their job.
Humans aren’t the only ones who have jobs. There are also cats all over the world that do their part to make sure things run smoothly for humans, establishments, boats, and even whole cities. Here are 6 working cats who probably deserve a raise… or at least a few more treats.
1. Matilda, Algonquin Hotel
This lovely ragdoll is the tenth cat to hold the honor of Algonquin Cat at the historic Algonquin hotel in New York City. Matilda greets guests, attends birthday parties and charity events, and poses for photos with fans… when she’s not sleeping, that is.
2. Felix, Huddersfield Station
Felix is the Senior Pet Controller at Huddersfield Station in West Yorkshire, England. Since 2011, she’s kept the station’s platforms free of mice and other vermin. She even wears a special uniform jacket!
3. Larry, 10 Downing St.
Larry’s full title is “Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.” That’s a fancy way of saying he keeps 10 Downing St., the famous residence of the Prime Minister, free of pests like mice and rats.
4. Sailor and Boatswain, Nikolay Chernyshevsky tourist boat
Sailor, an exotic shorthair, and his apprentice (that’s right), a Scottish Fold named Boatswain are mainstays on the tourist boat that cruises the river between Moscow and St. Petersburg. They keep watch on the captain’s bridge and are, of course, popular with passengers.
5. Stubbs, Talkeenta, Alaska
Do you believe a cat could the official mayor of a town? Believe it! In 1997, Stubbs, an orange tabby, won the mayoral election as a write-in candidate in Talkeenta, Alaska. Of course no other candidates were running because Talkeenta doesn’t have an actual mayor … except for Stubbs.
6. Spike, Left Bank Books
Spike, a gorgeous black cat, has worked at Left Bank Books in St. Louis for the last 11 years. He’s the third black cat who’s held the title of Part-time Night Manager. He even gets to have his literary say in the “Staff Picks.”
