Our Favorite Cat Books for Young Readers

At the CatCon Field Office, school has been back in session for a couple of weeks now, though we know some of your kiddos won’t start back until after Labor Day. To get your  cat-loving child ready for the world of book reports and reading logs, here are five of our favorite cat books for younger kids:

  1. There Are Cats in This Book
    by Viviane Schwarz
Your child will love answering the cats’ pleas to “Turn the Page!” in this funny, engaging book that’s full of surprises.
  2.

  3. The Tale of Tom Kitten
    by Beatrix Potter
Lesser-known than Peter Rabbit, but just as naughty, Tom and his siblings just can’t seem to behave for their mother’s tea party. Potter’s illustrations are charming, as always.
  4.

  5. Puss in Boots
This tale of a clever cat who makes his master’s fortune with just his wits and a sweet pair of kicks was published for the first time around 1550. There are dozens of illustrated versions, but we remember the Little Golden Book best.
  6.

  7. The Cat in the Hat
    by Dr. Seuss
Some things are classic for a reason! The Cat in the Hat and its sequels will either serve as an antidote to cries of “I’m bored!” on a rainy day, or serve as a cautionary tale of what NOT to do with Dad’s best shoes.
  8.

  9. They All Saw a Cat
    by Brendan Wenzel
This brand new release with absolutely gorgeous illustrations by first-time author Wenzel shows how different things look, depending on how you view them. It will delight parents and their kids.
  10.

Honorable Mention: Arabella the Heavenly Cat
by A.S. von Heukelom
Sadly, this book is out of print! But this book about a cat who returns to earth from heaven to help ease her Person’s loneliness is a favorite from my childhood. If you ever have the good fortune to find it at a garage sale or second-hand bookstore, snap it up!
